The Research Data Curator role demands that the incumbent functions as part of the wider eRKC’s team to ensure that its mandate in terms of research data related services is optimally fulfilled. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the HSRC Research Data Collection and facilitate its use, develop curation related policies and procedures, manage scholarship support services related to data, produce management and performance information related to research data, manage curation technologies, systems, and processes, as well as participate in the wider curation community.
The following are the key responsibilities for the Research Data Curator position:
•Spearhead the engagements with researchers. Train and assist staff in research units to
omanage research data according to best practices that support the preservation and dissemination of data.
ofacilitate the curation process, raise awareness about data management policies of funders, and assist researchers to comply with these, advise on the development of data management plans, and assist researchers to find relevant existing data sets.
oreview data preservation and sharing plans.
•Develop and maintain a data inventory.
•Curate deposited data and related documentation by
ovalidating and checking deposited data and documentation.
oreviewing and completing structured metadata and compiling user guides to describe datasets and facilitate re-use.
opreparing preservation and dissemination files.
•Manage the use of curated data by
omanaging requests and enquiries.
opromoting the use of curated data sets.
otraining users to access curated data.
opreparing reports on the curated data and the use thereof.
•Manage the curation process by
odeveloping Standard Operating Procedures and mentor staff.
odoing quality assurance on data, as well as data curation practices.
oproducing organisational performance information about research data.
•Liaise with colleagues in the eRKC and other departments, such as IT to provide researchers with a comprehensive data service.
•Representing the Digital Curation unit, the eRKC, and the HSRC at internal and external forums, by
oparticipating in the development of the IT infrastructure that supports curation.
onetworking and building capacity in the wider curation community.
oparticipating in local and international forums to the benefit of the HSRC.
This position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the area of research data management, especially in terms of quantitative data. A specific skill set that combines high technical / technology proficiency, knowledge of research methodology, scholarship support, and experience with the management of quantitative research data is required. The requirements are the following:
•Honours / or equivalent qualification in the social or information sciences or a data intensive discipline;
•5- 10 years’ experience in a quantitative data management context.
•Working knowledge of statistical software, such as SPSS, Stata and SAS, including data processing using syntax and high proficiency in MS Office.
•Knowledge of research methodology and research data (quantitative and / or qualitative) in the Social Sciences;
•Knowledge of metadata and archiving practices, as well as knowledge of international best practice and trends in the area of data curation;
•Problem-solving skills and the ability to search for and implement innovative solutions;
•Good interpersonal skills and a strong service orientation which will contribute to cooperative and effective interaction with colleagues;
•Good planning, organising, and presentation skills;
•Proficiency in speaking and writing English.
•Willingness to work under pressure, according to plan to meet deadlines.
