This role is core to the business’s portfolio management, critically analysing and contributing to the equity research process, active asset management of client portfolios, and client relationship management. The portfolio manager will be accountable for a portfolio of high value and sophisticated clients characterised by a high touch client service and overall client experience, by leveraging from a robust investment philosophy and process that is aligned to the MD house view. Foster collaborative and deep relationships with wealth managers and relationship managers, respectively. Expresses well-articulated views on all stocks and sectors we invest in. Must be a subject matter expert showcasing deep thinking across sectors, markets and the ability to make sense of highly complex markets and issues. Demonstrable ability to formulate business strategy development and implementation thereof. Promotes the investment philosophy and tests the integrity of the work done by the team against the investment philosophy. The individual is accountable for offering clients with a high touch personal client experience, building deep relationships with clients, constantly raising the bar, in order to achieve trusted advisor status. Responsibility for generating trading revenue with client base leveraging off the house view and investment ideas generated by the research team.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities


Relationship Managment :
  • PM’s will manage the relationship between Melville Douglas Advisory and their clients and ensure all clients are contacted on a regular basis
  • Building relationships and working closely with the channel referrers to grow new business
  • Structuring of reports, presentations and proposals
  • Discuss the performance of portfolios as well as giving clients an understanding of Melville Douglas’s view on the prevailing economic and investment environment
  • This involves client meetings and telephonic contact to drive trades volumes and revenue
  • This requires the PM’s to have a thorough knowledge of all companies in the Melville Douglas universe as well as a deep understanding of the Global investment environment, such as exchange rates, economic growth rates, inflation, political risk etc
  • PM’s act as the specialist investment interface between existing and potential clients for Standard Bank Wealth & Investment business
  • PM’s ensure that clients are compliant from a regulatory and statutory perspective

Portfolio Managment :

  • Drafting proposals for potential clients
  • Portfolio management and reviews, both local and offshore
  • Input and checking of trades
  • Writing of investment proposals
  • Investment performance calculations
  • Preparing of documents for client report backs
  • Ensure all portfolios have a back-up portfolio manager and he/ she is kept abreast of developments as appropriate

Risk, Regulatory, Prudential and Compliance :

  • Present new and or prospective clients to the Melville Douglas Business Assessment Forum Committee: Know-Your-Client, and protect the business and bank’s reputation.
  • Maintain awareness of current and future legislative regulations to ensure timeous and appropriate product compliance
  • Maintain awareness of the bank’s policies and procedures to ensure operational product compliance
  • Actively contribute to the operational risk framework in the unit by way of the maintenance of the risk and control self-assessment matrix for the business unit together with its associated key risk indicators
  • Manage client portfolios actively and must be aligned to the Melville Douglas model house view portfolio. Where there are exceptions, these must be saved on file with a clear instruction from the client.
  • Complete the compliance mandate monitoring exercise of client portfolios under your management, and account where there are deviations from mandate and model portfolio.
  • Comply with legislation and bank regulation, where you will be required to monitor activity across client portfolios, from an AML / FIC perspective. You will be accountable to report/escalate breaches through the various internal governing structures within Melville Douglas and the Bank
  • Assume responsibility for all trading and activities across your client portfolios, reporting into the applicable governing structures within Melville Douglas

Financial Management :

  • Portfolio managers are responsible for new client acquisition and organic client revenue growth - targets set at the beginning of the financial year.
  • Provides thought-leadership, innovation and strategic ability for better ways of working, and servicing various distribution channels within the bank, with strong multi-disciplinary expertise
  • Develops strong relationships with key distribution channels.
  • Foster regular contact and service the channel by insightful interactions and communication regarding our investment thinking
  • Interacts effectively with senior management internally and externally and able to facilitate growth of our business

Research & Insights :

  • Develop client and product insight, including working with distribution counterparts on the execution of recommendations and demonstration of business impact
  • Provide specialist input through the investigation of opportunities and assessment of risks relating to our investment portfolio
  • The PM is required to understand key financial and economic variables and trends (global investment environment, such as exchange rates, economic growth rates, inflation, political risk etc) to ensure optimal investment decisions to suit client portfolio requirements. All investment decisions are discretionary
  • Participate and contribute to Investment Committee debate and discussions both domestically and internationally
  • Provide input and participate in detailed sector and company research and analysis to enable investment decisions for MD’s private client portfolios, both domestic and global
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the offshore assets that MD invests in on behalf of its private client portfolios



Preferred Qualification and Experience


  • Post Graduate Degree -   Finance and Accounting
  • Relevant tertiary business qualification, CFA or CA, Completion of FAIS regulatory exams and Stockbroking/JSE licence.
  • Minimum 10 years experience Leadership experience within asset management/stockbroking or senior portfolio manager experience preferably managing assets on behalf of High-Net Worth Clients. Decision-making track record

Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise


  • The ability to analyse customer needs by engaging with them, analysing their personal financial objectives as well as their current financial position
  • Knowledge and understanding of the features, benefits and pricing of the products and services on offer to personal banking customers across multiple customer segments.
  • Sound knowledge of the Bank's laid down policies and procedures as it relates to the processing of customer transactions.
  • Within the Standard Bank Customer Experience Framework, is competent and skilled to enhance the customer experience: the ability to educate a customer
  • An in depth, experiential understanding of more advanced analyses and the way in which financial ratios, trends, business and value drivers interact
