antam’s Operations’ division currently has an exciting opportunity available for a Commercial Underwriter (CoE) who will be based within the Commercial Contact Centre, based in either Bellville, Cape Town, Bloemfontein or Pretoria

The COE is a highly technical role with strong client focus. The key focus is on underwriting new and existing business to maintain profitability while also creating a platform to aid the growth process. COE’s are responsible for taking sound underwriting decisions through mandates and taking initiative. The COE is a key source of knowledge and leverage to the business at large. COE is the final gate keeper of the health of the risk.

Principle Accountabilities
• Effective underwriting of complex risks (new business, renewals, ad-hoc)
• Identifying re-insurance and appropriate action
• Effective screening actions
• Providing quality and correct feedback on high level technical queries
• Working within higher level mandates
• Ownership of non-standard commercial products (e.g. Assets All Risks products)
• Negotiating with external clients (brokers)
• Building and maintaining relationships at various levels within the organization including CCC, Distribution and HO underwriting
• Strong retention focus
• Equipped to work from home – this talks to stable connectivity and back-up power in case of load shedding/power outage

Qualification and minimum requirements
• A minimum of 5 years Underwriting experience within a Short-term Commercial Insurance industry (required)
• Grade 12
• Bilingual (English and Afrikaans)
• FAIS compliant:  60 credits on NQF level 4 (Commercial Lines)
• Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Power Point
• A good understanding of contact centre processes and SLA’s
